When We Were Young

Dear Anne, Every couple of months, I do something I haven’t done since I was 14 years old—I go to the orthodontist. A number of years ago I began to notice that the fine work done by Dr. Berkowitz circa 1979 was reverting back to the snuggle-tooth-smile of my adolescence. A little over a year… Continue reading When We Were Young

Dear Susan, If I were giving you a presentation, would you be offended if I turned my back on you or would it make you pay more attention to my PowerPoint? That kind of sums up the arguments of those for and against having Mass ad orientem, with the priest facing away from the… Continue reading Much Ado About Ad Orientem

InstaAdvent Day 13: Today is the feast of St. Lucy so my heart is naturally pulled towards my Aunt Lucy, who died almost 3 months ago. She didn’t have a lot of money, but she donated $5 to many, many charities—like the widow’s mite, the donations were not from her excess. Her #generosity also extended to prayers. She had hand-written prayers and intentions throughout her house, for people she knew and many she didn’t. Her example of giving care and hope with the most abundant resource she had—her faith—is a legacy I hope I can live up to. #catholic #catholiclife #stlucy #prayforus #prayer #bhadvent19 @bustedhalo
InstaAdvent day 12: My most #memorablegift was from Christmas 2017 when my son (one of three boys) got on one knee and brought the first girl into our family! #boymom #tbt #catholiclife #bhadvent19 @bustedhalo
InstaAdvent Day 10: Mother Angelica is my #spiritualhero . Because if you can’t make people laugh, it’s hard to touch their hearts. #bhadvent19 #makeemlaugh #catholic #catholiclife @bustedhalo
InstaAdvent Day 9: when I cleaned out my grandparents’ house a couple of months ago—check out my older posts for the story of that adventure!—I brought home all the sheet music from the piano bench. This collection of carols was published in 1938, when my mother was just 7 years old. @bustedhalo #festivetunes #vintagechristmas #christmascarols #bhadvent19
InstaAdvent Day 8: Our parish #givingtree is the only time this empty nester gets to buy toys for Christmas! #futuregrandma #bhadvent19
InstaAdvent day 7: Yes, a day late because I was too busy mixing and mingling to post! #mixandmingle #christmascheer #bhadvent19
